Holistic Health Certificate Program
1. Introduction to Natural and Holistic Health
Foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Participants will learn why TCM is a complete medical system in itself and why this 5,000 year old medical system is still in use today. Also, the basic principles of TCM will be presented and how it differs from Western/conventional allopathic medical perspective. Participants will learn what medical modalities make up Traditional Chinese Medicine and the misconceptions surrounding the practice of TCM.
2. Clinical Guide to Acupuncture
The mapping of the body’s meridians and channels: Participants will learn of the origins of acupuncture as well as the concept of “Chi” and its relationship to disease. Explanations of an acupuncture prescription, types of needles, angle of insertion, in addition to various forms of acupuncture methods will be presented. An acupuncture prescription is based on a TCM holistic diagnosis.
3. The Art and Science of Herbs
Participants will learn the general concepts and energetic of Chinese herbology / natural medicines. The Materia Medica of Chinese herbs and the design of an herbal prescription will be introduced. Compare the clinical use of herbs with Western drug therapies. Here you will understand why herbs should not be used to treat symptoms, but instead they are prescribed according to the holistic needs of the patient. A demonstration of how natural medicines are stored and dispensed in a herbal pharmacy.
4. Nutrition and Anti-aging Principles
“ Let your food be your medicine and your medicine , your food.” How does the essence of good eating affect digestion and aging? How to choose foods and eat according to the seasons according to Chinese dietary therapy. Participants will learn what foods you should eat with a particular illness and according to their bodies constitution. The lecture will include tips on cooking with herbs as well as cooking directions to herbal soups.
5. Medical Chinese Terminology
Understand basic working knowledge of holistic and natural medicine. Learn the standardized medical language to fully understand the art and science of TCM. This is an introductory workshop to pinyin, Mandarin and how it is used in Oriental medicine.
6. Chi Cultivating Exercises; Tai Chi Qi Gong
Chinese mind-body energetics; Learn to cultivate your life energy through various techniques of physical activity, meditation, internal massage and breathing exercises. The focus of these slow moving exercises is to stabilize the inner-core which is the internal aspects of the body. Participants will learn to be more connected with his/her body and their own healing powers. An introduction to Tao Yin exercises (Taoist yoga) or moving meditation is included.
7. Chinese Perspectives in Holistic Health
Participants will learn that TCM doesn’t not focus on symptoms, but is based on treating the patient’s body, mind, and spirit. An overview of disease prevention, lifestyle modification, longevity and wellness programs, health music, feng shui, stress management, emotional self-care, natural living, etc. will be presented.
8. Massage, Acupressure, Tui Na and Manual Therapeutics
Understand the general concepts of hands on healing. Participants will develop their therapeutic touch and learn basic massage techniques as well as how to locate common acupressure points. Learn clinical acupressure prescriptions to relieve common conditions. This lecture will help the student understand the use of other medical modalities (acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional, exercise, etc.) to enhance clinical outcomes. Oriental bodywork such as cupping, moxibustion, and gua shi will be included.
9. Ancient Medical Classics
The art of healing will be explained in detail from ancient medical texts. Specific chapters on the underlying principles of TCM will be discussed in-depth such as balance & harmony, medical ethics, cosmology, nature of illness, seasonal pathology, imbalances, etc. This session will be in discussion format and require reading that will be assigned ahead of time.
10. Chinese Cultural Studies
Lecture may involve any of the following topics: Language (pinyin), history of dynasties, cultural holidays, Chinese calligraphy, geography, travel and dining.
11. Clinical Case Studies
Complete presentation of actual patient case studies from Center fo Integrated Medicine. Participants will get a chance to expand his/her knowledge of holistic and natural medicine in clinical use. Case studies may or may not include allopathic conventional intervention. Chief complaints, symptoms – complex differentiation, TCM holistic diagnosis, assessment, plan of treatment, follow-up care etc. Participants are only allowed to take this lecture after all others have been completed (except for #12, Elective CIM workshop).
12. Elective CIM workshops
Selected workshops open to the public in alternative and complementary medicine. At least one workshop must be attended to fulfill this requirement. Topics are, but not limited to Oriental natural facelift and skin rejuvenation, all the tea in China, cancer supportive care with TCM, Integrating TCM in the treatment of diabetes, Holistic medicine for children/adolescent, Oriental medicine/acupuncturist as a career, weight management and treatment of obesity with TCM, the role of TCM in kidney disease, etc.
